Mental Health Speaker for Schools – Keith Deltano

Keith’s positive mental health assembly, “Break Out of the Box,” addresses depression, anxiety, eating disorders, suicidal ideation, and other self-harming behaviors.  Keith has OCD and bi polar disorder.  He  learned to manage his mental health challenges and was able to be a paratrooper, award winning classroom teacher, parent coach, academic competition team coach, internationally touring educational comedian, video curriculum creator, and most importantly: husband and father.

Keith Offers Teens Hope and a Model to Follow: Ask for Help, Build a Team, Learn Coping Skills.

“I have been in the mental health field for twenty-eight years in a variety of different roles.  I have worked with several teams of psychologists, therapists, social workers, and psychiatrists and have NEVER EVER witnessed a mental health speaker diffuse the stigma that surrounds asking for help with the hope that you did.” – Keith Trott, Director, TBI/Mental Health Unit, CT Valley Hospital

Keith’s Presentation is a Serious Comedy Show That Acts Like a Net: It Pulls Out Hurting Kids

Cutting, anorexia, bulimia, anxiety disorders, depression, and suicide have reached epidemic proportions in our middle and high school populations. The isolation and loss of structure the pandemic caused has resulted in a dramatic increase in teen depression and anxiety as well as other mental health challenges. We need to do something about this.

Having Hope and Getting Help

Keith is not a doctor or licensed therapist. He is not a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist.  He has spent over three decades working on the front lines with at risk young people and is very good at teaching simple coping skills and prompting teens dealing with a mental illness to ask for help.  Keith does not provide therapy during his presentations: he provides hope and prompts students to ask for help – which often gets them to therapy.

Hope   Help   Cope

Keith gives the students hope, encourages them to get help if they feel they may need it, and teaches them some simple coping strategies.  He does not provide care above what he is qualified to do, he simply advises students to do the things that every psychiatrist or therapist encourages struggling teens to do: get enough sleep, have a regular wake up time, establish a schedule, don’t compare yourself to others, cutdown or eliminate social media, surround yourself with a support group, identify and avoid triggers, build resilience, don’t be alone when depressed/anxious or tempted to self-harm, and adjust goals if “stuck.”

He Will Say the Same Things a School Counselor Would Say – He Just Says it Different.

Hope For Your Students All Year Long!

Each school that uses Keith for a virtual mental health presentation will receive a one year subscription to Keith’s video streaming website,  www.CharacterVideo.org. This site will allow teachers and administrators to stream positive uplifting video lessons at the classroom level or even school wide for one year.  Think Netflix for your school.

Why Use Mental Health Speakers?

A mental health speaker that has worked with students on mental health related topics for years may be able to reach teens in a more relatable and impactful way. They have focused specifically on breaking through teen angst to implement change regarding these unique issues.

Will Keith’s Virtual Mental Health Assembly Hold Their Attention?

Mental Health Speaker for Middle School and High School and Your Demographics

Keith can customize his presentation to the middle and high school level.  He can also adapt to a specific topic you would like to address by communicating with you before the presentations.  He has performed in every state except Hawaii and can adjust to different cultures and demographics.

Keith Can Include an Anti Cyber Bullying Component

Because of the documented connection between cyberbullying and self-harming behaviors, Keith can include an anti cyberbullying message within his positive mental health presentations.

"Thank you for presenting to Bankbridge Regional School and speaking with our middle school and high school students.  Our students have both behavioral and mental health issues and can be a difficult group to work with.  The students loved and were inspired by your presentation, but most of all, appreciated your openness and honesty about the strategies you use to deal with your own mental illness”

Keith's anti cyberbullying program is built into his bullying assembly and addresses the stark reality of social media abuse and addiction among America's youth.  In his travels as a cyberbullying speaker Keith frequently runs into adults and administrators that make statements like, "This bullying thing is overblown" or "Cyberbullying is just bullying online and a rite of passage - no big deal."  Keith puts a lot of study into each topic he addresses and, though he uses comedy as a medium, his programs and assemblies are based on facts. When it comes to cyberbullyng and it's link to school disruption, anxiety disorders, suicidal ideation, and other negative outcomes, the statistics and credible peer reviewed studies speak for themselves.

The Cyberbullying Statistics are Staggering

  • 17.4 percent of teens have experienced cyberbullying in the last thirty day window. (StopBullying.gov)
  • 64 percent of students who have been cyberbullied say it affects their ability to function and learn while at school and at home. (Cyberbullying Research Center)
  • Cyberbullying is predictive of some significant psychological and behavioral health problems among adolescents. (Journal of Adolescent Health 2019)
  • Students who experince continual cyberbullying are nearly two times more likly to attempt suicide. (The Journal of School Violence 2019)
  • Approximately twenty percent of American teens experience a serious mental health event associated with social isolation and cyberbullying. (CDC 2019)

Teens Need Us to Tell Them the Truth About the Legal Consquences of Cyberbullying and Sexting

Truth About the Legal Consquences of CyberbullyingThere are things that need to be talked about but are uncomfortable to address. Keith believes we NEED to talk about these uncomfortable topics because we owe it to the students we serve.  Sexting is one of those topics.  At the high school level, and depending on demographics, at the seventh and eighth grade levels, Keith takes on sexting and sharing naked images. Keith has observed that educators, social commentators, law enforcement officials, and media personalities are talking to each other quite a bit about teen sexting...we just don't seem to be talking to the actual teens about it.  They need to know the truth: they can be criminally prosecuted. Keith has found that teens simply don't know that in 23 states sending naked images of a person under 18 (even if it is of themselves) violates child pornagraphy statutes and they can be charged with a felony...a felony that will not be expunged from their record after they turn 18.

Uncomfortable With Addressing Sexting at Your School...The Statistics Show You Need To
  • 15 percent of teens have sent a naked image, 27 percent have received one and 12 percent of teens have forwarded a naked image without consent.  (University of New Mexico Meta Study 2019)
Due to privacy laws there are no peer reviewed statistics on how many teens are being prosecuted for cyberbullying.  However, Keith believes the number is probably higher than the average person would assume.  He has traveled throughout the United States and many school administrators have let him know they have had to refer sexting incidents to law enforcement and the teens were successfully prosecuted.  Many of those teens will have to live with a felony the rest of their lives.

There is Hope - What You Do in Response to The Cyberbullying Epidemic Matters

  • Specific anti bullying and anti cyberbullying programs and curriculum effectivly reduce school bullying (Gaffney, Trof, and Farrington 2018)
Keith's anti cyberbullying program followed up by his anti bullying curriculum will have a long term positive affect on your high school and middle school culture.

"After Keith performed his anti cyberbullying assemblies for our middle and high schools, we implemented his curriculum and we have seen a decrease in cyberbullying / harassment problems during the year.”

Assembly Addresses Uncomfortable Reality

High School HazingOne and a half million high school students are hazed each year. Ninety one percent of all high school students belong to at least one group, club, or team, and half of them report being subjected to hazing activities.

Forty three percent were submitted to humiliating activities and thirty percent performed potentially illegal acts as part of their initiation.  This is occurring in both the male and female population.  Perhaps the most disturbing statistic to come out  of a recent spate of studies on high school hazing is that ninety two percent of high school students do not report the fact that they have witnessed or have been a victim of hazing.

One of the most interesting aspects of hazing behavior is that it appears to be occurring throughout high school group/team culture or not at all.  Schools appear to either have a large hazing problem or none whatsoever.  Keith can adapt his anti bullying assembly to include a large component on hazing if it is occurring at your school.  Students that are engaged in hazing seem to consider it normal and do not consider it to be classified as bullying.

High School Hazing Is A Form Of Bullying

Keith will show that hazing is indeed a form of bullying and an unequal application of power. Hazing, like bullying, is difficult to monitor because it often happens off campus or in secret.  Schools need to include hazing in their anti bullying policies and efforts and define it for the student population. To combat hazing on high school campuses, administrators need to clearly define hazing, establish a policy to deal with it, and outline its consequences - similarly to how schools have implemented anti bullying policies.

Hazing Hurts High School Athletic Teams

Anti Hazing AssemblyWhen Keith addressees athletic hazing, he gets the students to realize that the prevailing culture of "don't ask, don't tell" underlies the camaraderie of sports teams. He lets them know it is wrong to be a passive bystander when another person's health, dignity, and life are at stake.  A good teammate will standup for members of their team if they need it. Keith lets bystanders know the power they have to prevent further hazing. Keith shows students that hazing has negative effects on both victims and participants and these effects create feelings of apathy, mistrust, or isolation rather than of bonding and respect. Hazing can destroy self-esteem, self-confidence, group unity/cohesion, friendships, and more. It can create stress and may induce or aggravate psychological illnesses including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, or anxiety.

Keith's Assembly Will Teach Students Appropriate Responses

Prevent Hazing and BullyingKeith encourages schools to make routes for witnesses to comfortably come forward clear. To facilitate communication and the reporting of illegal activities, schools may even want to create an anonymous tip line or suggestion box. Keith will show up for each assembly thirty minutes early.  He will want to learn, in detail, what is happening at your school.  If hazing is a problem, let him know and Keith will address it in a way that will empower bystanders to make a stand.  Victims will also learn where to go to get help. Hazing is a form of bullying, and like so much of what Keith addresses, it is uncomfortable to talk about.  But, in order to keep schools safe for learning, it must be addressed and the teens need to know how to respond when they are a victim or witness to it.

High School Drug and Alcohol Use - The Statistics Are Staggering

  • One in six teens binge drinks, however, only one in one hundred parents believe that this may actually be happening with their teen.
  •  Teen alcohol use kills more than 4700 people per year. This incredible number does not include severe injury or permeant disability.
  • High School students who use alcohol or drugs are five times more likely to drop out of school.
  • 10% of teens have driven after drinking and 22% have ridden in a car with a person they knew consumed alcohol.
  • Last year, there were approximately 189,000 emergency room visits by persons under the age of 21 for injuries and other conditions linked to    alcohol.

Keith’s Assembly Will Make The Consequences of Teen Drug and Alcohol Use Real

alcohol killsUsing his customary high impact, in your face delivery, Keith’s drug awareness assembly will bring home the harsh realities of drug and alcohol use.  Keith will use cutting edge serious comedy to make the above statistics real.  Keith uses audience interaction and role playing to show that drug use isn’t sexy, it’s dangerous. Studies show that many teens believe the only risk of injury from drug and alcohol use occurs and when they get in a car.  Keith shows that getting in a car driven by someone that is intoxicated or buzzed is not the only danger. He will have an audience volunteer get so “drunk” they “die” from alcohol poisoning.  He brings the impact of alcohol poisoning home.  You don’t have to die in a car wreck, you can just as easily die while your “sleeping it off” on your best friends couch. Keith also addresses the loss of cognitive function that can occur with drug and alcohol use.

Keith Will Explode the Idea That “It Can’t Happen To Me”

Using his experience as a Military Police officer, Keith will stage a traffic stop using audience volunteers.  Thidrug free assemblys will end up with the suspect handcuffed face down on the side of the road.  Keith then interviews the suspect about how he feels and what his future now holds. The students will be forced to acknowledge the incredible risks they take when experimenting with drugs and alcohol. Keith will graphically dismantle the idea that “It won’t happen to me” and make the negative consequences of drug and alcohol use real.  Perfect for prom season.

Serious Comedy Holds The Audience’s Attention and Helps Them Memorize Key Concepts

drug free assemblyKeith’s presentation is not a lecture, it is an impassioned presentation that uses comedy and role playing as an educational tool.  As an award winning middle school teacher, Keith used comedy to keep his student’s attention and to help them memorized the concepts he was teaching.  Students will laugh, and the laughter will help them learn how dangerous drug and alcohol use is to their goals and dreams.

Parent Workshop On Substance Abuse Prevention

Keith can also conduct an evening workshop for parents and guardians that gives them simple strategies they can use to help their teens make good decisions.  Parents will learn how to make the risks of substance abuse real to their teens as well as how to use their teens own goals and dreams to protect them.

Virtual Anti Suicide Assembly Includes an Anti Bullying Message

anti teen suicide speakerKeith’s anti bullying and anti suicide assembly, “Break Out of The Box”, addresses both bullying and self harming behaviors in one session. This anti suicide assembly uses comedy to take on bullying as well as the self harming behaviors that can result from it. Keith deals with teen depression and the self destructive behaviors that may accompany it. Keith struggled with, and was victorious over, depression and self destructive behaviors in high school.   Keith’s story offers hope and a model for hurting students in the audience to follow: ask for help, build a team, life gets better.

Keith’s Anti Suicide Assembly Helps Teens Reach Out

Cutting, anorexia, bulimia, and suicide have reached epidemic proportions in our middle and high school populations.  Much of this is happening as a result of bullying and cyberbullying. The connection between bullying and teen suicide has been well documented at the middle and high school levels.  We need to do something about this.  Keith can help by showing how destructive bullying behaviors can be and by teaching students how to respond to bullying when they see it. Keith’s show, “Break Out of the Box”, is different from his regular anti bullying assembly in that he spends more time defining self harming behaviors, teaching students how to recognize and combat negative thoughts, and most importantly, encouraging those that are hurting to get help. Keith will make an impassioned appeal for those in the audience that may be engaged in self harming behaviors to reach out and request assistance. Think of “Break Out of the Box” as a serious comedy show that acts like a net.  It pulls out hurting kids.

"I have been in the Mental Health Field for twenty-eight years in a variety of different roles.  I have worked with several teams of psychologists, therapists, social workers, and psychiatrists and have NEVER EVER witnessed anyone in those disciplines diffuse the stigma that surrounds asking for help with the hope that you did.” Keith Trott Director TBI/Mental Health Unit CT Valley Hospital

Teen Suicide, Self Harm, and Bullying Rates, are Staggering

According to the Center for Disease Control, suicide is the second leading cause of death for Americans between ten and twenty four.  That’s mind numbing. Four out of five teens that attempt suicide have given clear warning signs.  What if all the students and staff at your school knew what these warning behaviors looked like and what to do if they observed them? Students at your school would be safer. Teens need to get help if they are cutting, that’s a given. But shouldn’t students know what to do if they have a friend that is cutting and not seeking help? Why bring Keith in to address both self harming behaviors and bullying? Because they go together.

Yes, Addressing Suicide, Cutting, and Bullying Can Be Uncomfortable

Keith’s show, “Break Out of The Box”, deals with bullying, cyberbullying, suicide, cutting, and depression.  These are not cheery topics.  Though Keith uses uplifting comedy to deliver his message, the topics are what they are.  You may hear people say, “That’s not a problem here.” Or, “Do we have to do a school wide assembly? I’ve only heard of a few kids cutting.” Or, “We may have a few parents that are uncomfortable with this.”  Students need their leadership to be willing to be uncomfortable for them, they need leaders that will do the right thing even though it may be unusual.  They need you to help them deal with the world they live in, not the one you wished they lived in.  Teen suicide is preventable but we, as a culture, are not doing everything we can to prevent it. Take compassionate action on these tough issues and help the hurting by bringing Keith in.

Each School Will Receive Keith’s Curriculum, “The Complete Anti Bullying Kit”

The Complete Parent Workshop KitKeith’s three DVD anti bullying curriculum, “The Complete Anti Bullying Kit,” will help you keep the positive momentum going that the assemblies started.  It includes the “Anti Suicide Rant” (video above, left) as well as follow up questions. It also includes several short comedy clips that address bullying as well as mental health issues.
